Layoff severance pay calculator
How many paid days a layoff package adds up to — severance accrual by years of service, the notice period, and unused PTO — and what that converts to before and after tax. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
Fills years of service from the calendar; you can still overwrite it below.
Shares scheduled to vest before your last day × current share price, if your employer's plan keeps vesting through the notice period.
Estimates only — actual severance depends on your employer's policy, your agreements, and local law. Not a prediction of any employer's decision.
About these numbers
- Educational estimate — not financial, tax, or legal advice. Actual severance depends on your employer's policy, your agreements, and local law; some jurisdictions set statutory minimums this page does not model.
- Pay per working day divides annual compensation by the working days per year you enter (260 = 52 weeks × 5 days).
- The post-tax figure applies one flat effective rate you enter; real withholding on severance varies by jurisdiction and pay type.
- RSU treatment during a notice period varies by employer and plan — the optional RSU field simply adds the value you enter to the pre-tax total.

Severance packages commonly combine several paid components: an accrual based on tenure (days or weeks per year of service), a notice period (worked or paid in lieu), and a payout of unused vacation days. Some packages also include equity that vests during the notice period, continued benefits, or statutory amounts set by local law. This calculator models the day-based components and lets you add an equity amount; it does not model benefits or statutory minimums.

Common questions
How is severance pay calculated here?
This page multiplies severance days per year of service by your years of service, adds notice-period days and unused PTO days, and converts the total to money using your annual compensation divided by working days per year. Pre-tax pay times one minus your effective tax rate gives the post-tax figure. It is a generic day-based model — employers also use weeks-per-year or lump-sum formulas.
Do RSUs keep vesting during a notice period?
At many employers the notice period is continued employment, so shares scheduled to vest before the last day of employment can still vest — but treatment varies by employer, plan, and jurisdiction. If yours continues vesting, enter the value of those shares in the optional RSU field and it is added to the pre-tax total.
Is severance taxed differently from salary?
In many jurisdictions severance is taxed as ordinary income but may be withheld at a different flat rate than a regular paycheck. This calculator applies the single effective rate you enter; your actual withholding and final tax can differ.
What if my employer uses weeks per year instead of days?
Multiply weeks per year of service by your working days per week (usually 5) and enter the result as severance days per year. Two weeks per year, for example, is 10 working days per year of service.
